Course Description: People can be greatly impaired in their day to day lives when suffering from a driving phobia disorder, which many mental health professionals consider an anxiety disorder. These feelings of anxiety can be triggered under various conditions, such as: driving at high speeds, driving over a bridge / through a tunnel, or driving in close proximity to large trucks. Traditionally, cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) are the gold standard of treatment in these disorders. This study focuses on virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) and its role in the treatment of driving phobias with an eye on the larger treatment of various other anxiety disorders. Based on the advanced feedback data and the systemic development of driving phobia VRET, the study postulates that VRET should be a supported treatment modality for anxiety disorders and bears further research moving forward.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the main aim of the study and explain the methods related to formulating and constructing VRET technology for treatment of driving phobia disorders, including the five steps of the pre-test procedure.
- Identify two key findings of the research and consider the external validity of these findings.
- List two considerations stated by the researchers pertaining to future research in this area.
Course Outline:
- Read and understand Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy for Driving Phobia Disorder: System Design and Development
- Review the Course Descriptions and Learning Objectives
- Consider the factors related to driving related phobias/anxieties and the methods and role of VRET in the treatment of the disorder
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
