Number of credits: 1
This course is for: Clinical Psychologists and Counselors
Course By: Rachel Schoor, PhD
Course Content: Lusicic, A., Schruers, K. R., Pallanti, S., & Castle, D. J. (2018). Transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of obsessive–compulsive disorder: Current perspectives. Neuropsychiatric disease and treatment, 14, 1721. https://doi.org/10.2147/NDT.S121140
Course Description: The non-invasive neurostimulation techniques of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) have received increasing attention regarding their potential for treating psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This review examines the effects of rTMS and dTMS stimulation on different brain targets in OCD. While the underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain unknown, rTMS and dTMS appear to offer an additional way of addressing OCD symptoms. Improved understanding of the therapeutic effects of rTMS and dTMS in OCD will support fine-tuning of the method and optimization of the approach to achieve clinically relevant results.
Learning Objectives
- Identify one main purpose of the review and list the parts of the brain that have successfully been targeted with rTMS or dTMS to reduce symptoms.
- Identify two key findings presented by the researchers.
- Identify and summarize two considerations for future research presented by the researchers in the discussion.
Course Outline
- Read and understand Transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of obsessive–compulsive disorder: Current perspectives
- Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
- Consider the factors related to rTMS and dTMS for the treatment of OCD
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
- Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the relationships between rTMS/ dTMS and OCD symptomology of OCD
