Course Description: Nonverbal communication in face-to-face interpersonal interactions (FTF) has been extensively studied by researchers regarding how humans express affection and generate relationships. However nowadays, with most communication being done technologically through video-mediated communication (VMC) and computer-mediated communication (CMC), there is less of a chance of these important signifiers being picked up by the other half of the interpersonal relationship. This study assesses the rate at which these nonverbal cues are transmitted during instances of VMC and whether this has an effect on social attraction and relationship initiation. It also attempts to outline the key differences between these two communication forms, including a lack of physical copresence and a diminished transmission of nonverbal cues. The study finds that participants in VMC/CMC spoke louder, smiled more, and touched their face less than FTF interactants to counteract this lack of intimacy. This study has implications for the field of social attraction measures.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the central aim of the study and the methods related to the differences of nonverbal communication between face-to-face and video/computer-mediated interactions and the role they play in relationship initiation.
- Identify the effect nonverbal expressions have in the process of social attraction and whether they are enhanced or diminished by reduced copresence.
- Identify the probability that increasing computer-mediated communication focus will shape the process of future interpersonal relationship induction.
Course Outline:
- Read and understand Social attraction in video-mediated communication: The role of nonverbal affiliative behavior
- Review the Course Descriptions and Learning Objectives
- Consider the factors related to non-verbal behavioral cues and formation of relationship signifiers over video communication
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
- Re-assess for any missed questions, returning to the referenced article to better understand the relationship between the impact of less non-verbal cues of video communication in comparison to face to face meetings
