Course Description: Severe health anxiety, or hypochondria, is defined as an illness anxiety disorder where individuals are preoccupied by the fear of suffering from a serious illness in spite of reassurance by medical professionals. This can lead to chronic debilitation as well as unnecessary, excessive use of healthcare services. The current study assesses the benefit of using internet-based behavioral therapy to treat hypochondriac individuals directly to avoid prolonged anxiety and recurring medical costs. The findings of the study show that online treatment can be a feasible option for these vulnerable individuals, although a larger study with a bigger sample size is needed to increase validity of results.
