Course by: Steven M. Sultanoff, PhD
Steven M. Sultanoff, Ph.D. is a psychologist, professional speaker and trainer, professor, and consultant. He has offered more than 300 live continuing education and training workshops as well as creating multi-media, online programs in a wide range of topics including cognitive behavioral therapy, clinical supervision, emotional intelligence, and his unusual specialty area of integrating humor into psychotherapy.

Course Description: Integrating Deliberate Practice into Clinical Supervision: Creative Concepts is designed to offer a brief introduction into deliberate practice training, illustrate how it can be easily integrated into supervision, and expand opportunities for your supervisees to pursue Deliberate Practice training outside of supervision.  While mostly PowerPoint driven, the program will include vignettes, videos, and an unedited video of a live Deliberate Practice training session.

The program will incorporate multiple therapeutic responses that can be learned through Deliberate Practice training and non-therapeutic, autopilot responses that can be unlearned through Deliberate Practice training. You will learn how to train supervisees in effective responding; identify autopilot, ingrained, ineffective responding; and learn how to help supervisees overcome ingrained, ineffective interventions. You will discover autopilot blocks that interfere with supervisee development and how to address them.

The program will include exploration of both the mechanical aspects of psychotherapy and other performance-based activities as well as the conscious, strategic choices that result in effectiveness. You will learn how to help supervisees bridge the gap from Deliberate Practice Training to working with clients.

Learning Objectives:
Attendees will be able to:

  1. Differentiate Deliberate Practice from other forms of supervision
  2. Integrate Deliberate Practice into supervision
  3. Differentiate between the mechanical and strategic elements of performance-based learning
  4. Teach supervisees advanced levels of empathic responding as well as other therapeutic response types
  5. Teach supervisees to implement deliberate practice activities outside of supervision
