Course Description: Impulsivity is a multidimensional set of traits associated with risk for initiation and escalation of substance use culminating in substance use disorder. An extensive body of research has characterized the relationship between domains of impulsivity (e.g., sensation seeking, positive and negative urgency, delay discounting) with addictive behaviors in adolescent and young adult populations. Considerably less research has examined the relationship between these processes in middle-to-older adult samples. Three domains of impulsivity—delay discounting, prepotent response inhibition, and impulsive behavior-related personality traits—were associated with addictive behaviors across developmental stages. Future research is needed to reliably measure impulsivity among older adults in order to develop targeted interventions for this age group.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the five traits of impulsivity as measured by the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale
- Compare and contrast the relationship between various dimensions of impulsivity with addictive behaviors over the lifespan
- Describe the limitations to studying the role of impulsive behavior in addiction among older adults
Course Outline:
- Read and understand Age and impulsive behavior in drug addiction: A review of past research and future directions
- Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
- Reflect on the relationship between dimensions of impulsivity with risk for addiction across developmental life stages
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
- Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the social, biological, and environmental correlates linking impulsivity to addiction throughout the lifespan
