Course Description: Suicide is among the leading causes of death for veterans. Research suggests that this is evident across multiple generations of former service members. There is a need for an effective identification tool to classify veterans who are at an increased risk for suicidal capability. The current study examines the utility of the assessment most often used to distinguish suicide risk in veterans. The results show that both internalizing and externalizing scales play a role in discerning depressed attempters from depressed ideators. It also discusses clinical implications for possible therapeutic interventions.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the central aim of the study and the methods related to pinpointing suicidal risk in veteran patients
- Assess the ways in which internalizing and externalizing scales can distinguish between suicidal attempters and suicidal ideators
- Consider plausible intervention tactics for treatment in vulnerable individuals
