Course Description: Studies show that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP) is an effective treatment for Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD), but the extent of its effectiveness under different conditions remains uncertain. This article reports a meta-analysis of experimental studies on the effectiveness of CBT with ERP for treating OCD. The authors found that the effectiveness of CBT with ERP depended on the comparison condition used in each experiment. For example, CBT with ERP was more effective than psychological placebos such as progressive relaxation, but no differences in effectiveness were observed when CBT with ERP was compared to active treatments such as cognitive therapy. Likewise, CBT with ERP was more effective than pharmacological treatment overall, but no differences emerged when individuals in the pharmacological group were receiving adequate dosages of medication. These and other findings suggest that although CBT with ERP is an effective treatment for OCD, it may not be more effective than all other forms of therapy.
Learning Objectives:

- Describe the main findings with respect to the effectiveness of CBT with ERP as a form of treatment for OCD
- Integrate the strengths and limitations of the meta-analysis, and summarize the clinical implications for supporting individuals with OCD
