Course Description: Owing to the rapid proliferation of child maltreatment studies in recent years, a broad synthesis of findings is needed. The authors of this study conducted a synthesis of meta-analyses, published between 2014 and 2018, that addressed child maltreatment antecedents and interventions. The synthesis revealed that risk factors for maltreatment include parental experiences of maltreatment in childhood, low socioeconomic status, dependent and aggressive parental personalities, intimate partner violence, and higher baseline autonomic nervous system activity. Interventions found to be moderately effective included those that target child abuse potential and those that serve families who self-report maltreatment. Overall, the synthesis highlights gaps where further research is needed, and it has practical implications for the development of interventions intended to prevent or reduce child maltreatment.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the rationale for conducting this synthesis as well as the methods used to select and analyze studies
- Describe the main findings with respect to antecedents of maltreatment and types of interventions
- Integrate the strengths and limitations of the synthesis, and summarize the implications for developing interventions to prevent or reduce child maltreatment
